Captain Steer has spent over 35 years as a commercial fisher and professional mariner on the west coast of Canada. Bob has experience in numerous fisheries, dive fisheries for geoduck, cucumber and scallops as well as long line fisheries such as black cod and halibut. Bob also participated in various net fisheries such as herring and Salmon. Bob is an avid recreational fisher and always enjoys mentoring new entries to the recreational fishery.
Bob has spent several years on research vessels on both Canada’s West Coast with Fisheries and Oceans Canada and in the Canadian Arctic conducting archeological surveys with Parks Canada during the search for the Franklin Expedition vessels. Bob also participated in cetacean studies on Canada’s west Coast. Bob also has sailed with the cruise ship industry joining Princess Cruise Lines aboard the largest cruise ship serving the industry at that time.
In addition, Bob has been Master of a landing craft and barges serving the remote coastal communities and camps of British Columbia. Bob has also worked the Great lakes/St Lawrence Seaway region.
In recent years Bob has provided Pilot Waivered Services to the Super Yacht and commercial vessel sector. This has been a terrific opportunity to showcase his vast local knowledge of the British Columbia Coast and communities.
Bob qualifies for the Pacific Pilotage Authority Waiver in Zone 1 (Fraser River), Zone 2 (north and south inside waters of Vancouver Island), Zone 3 (the west coast of Vancouver Island), Zone 4 (central coast waters from Pine Island to Dixon Entrance) and Zone 5 (the Queen Charlotte Islands, Haida Gwai).
